The weeks went by in a peaceful blur.
Zell was getting pretty good at guitar. He was even making some money from songwriting.
My woodworking improved just enough that I could scrape together my rent from furniture sales.
Our neighbor Caleb, also a vampire, would come over to practice sparring with Zell, but Zell was terrible at vampire duels. He lost every time.
And I didn’t have anything against our neighbor, but sometimes Caleb would creepily watch us…
…and then he’d smirk, as if he knew some secret about us. It made me just a little uncomfortable.
But, I think, for the first time in my life, I was happy.
I decided one day to harvest fruit from Zell’s weird tree and make him a salad.
“Thoughts?” I asked.
“Benji,” replied Zell. “This is the most delicious thing I have ever eaten in my entire life.”
I believed him, too, because he ate three more bowls of it in one sitting.
